of the one of many people who die each year from smoking related
illnesses.
Here are some numbers for you to contemplate while looking at the
rest of this site
In the UK in the 50 years between 1950 and 2000 some 6.3 Million
people died from smoking related causes. Of which about 3.2 Million
were classed as being middle aged, on average these people could
have expected to live for another 21 years if they had not smoked.
Again in the UK in the year 2000 there were 19,530 deaths from
non-medical causes, i.e. Murder, Suicide, Road Accidents, Falls etc.
These deaths, in general, get reported in the media and the
authorities spend a significant amount of time and resources on
reducing these deaths. Now during the same year there were nearly
six times as many deaths from smoking related causes, that's 115,000
people who lost their lives to smoking. (data from Deathsfromsmoking.net)
